CHAPTER NINE

LOCO CELEBRITY

I had arrived at camp that morning ready to work. It seemed like the absolute best distraction from whatever was going on with my powers. After the fiasco at Charlie’s the day before, I had gone home and read up on some famous directors and how they “ran” their sets. I was nervous, of course; who wouldn’t be! I was in charge of the whole thing now, and I really didn’t want to let anyone down. And, truthfully, there was another reason to be nervous—Nick. I’d managed to avoid him so far. I was still feeling embarrassed about yesterday, and I had no clue if he remembered it, let alone how he felt. There was no way he could really have a crush on me, too. It was just my powers. Had to be. Anyway, I needed a distraction and boy-oh-boy was I about to get one.

“Veronica, this is our current marketing piece,” Rashida said quietly as she covered the microphone of the phone she was talking on. She pinned the phone to her ear with her shoulder and rifled through her bag. After removing her spare phone, tablet, and laptop, she handed me a copy of one of the posters I’d drawn to advertise the movie, all while continuing her phone conversation. Excited, I leafed through the pages. Except it wasn’t at all what I had intended. Rashida had Photoshopped in big block letters that said, Thrills! Chills! And Romance!

“Romance?” I asked her. Our movie didn’t have any romance whatsoever.

She held up one finger, implying I wait for a moment. “Roger that, doll!” She then looked at me and said, “What were you saying?”

“This says ‘romance.’ We don’t have romance in this film.”

“Uh-huh,” she answered, half listening. She was typing a text message. “We want to get everyone to come see it, right?” she asked.

“Well, yeah,” I explained, “but we can’t lie to people. We can’t have them expect to see romance and end up with a slimy monster.”

“They’ll still like it.”

“But it’s not a romance,” I told her.

“To you,” she said.

Touché! I was about to tell her how this could be a slippery slope into false advertising, but I was interrupted by Ted, who was carrying a large bolt of long neon-green faux fur.

“Veronica, Max needs to know how big Avery’s head is in order to finish the costume.”

I stared at him blankly.

“Avery might be a better source for that information,” I suggested.

“Oh yeah!” Ted said like the thought had never occurred to him. He turned to look for Avery.

“Wait, Ted, what’s the fabric for?” I asked.

Ted smiled. “Max has been reimagining the costume. That man is on fire!”

None of these words worked for me. “Take me to him.”

“What about the romance?” Rashida asked. She sounded a little sad, like I had forgotten her. (I had.)

“Just—just fix it.” I added, “I know you’ll make it great.”

She lit up. “Okay! I’m just about to start our social media campaign. I’m really excited about it!”

“Cool,” I said nervously as I followed Ted.
